ABOUT REVA

Reva Sangal (pronounced Ray-va Sun-gul)

Reva (SHE/HER) is a Desi American Chicago and New York City based Music Theatre singer, dancer, actor, and writer. Raised in New Jersey, Reva quickly found a passion for Musical Theatre and Composition. Growing up in a vibrant Desi community but failing to see representation within theatrical spaces, Reva began a mission to increase representation - beginning her pursuit toward a performing arts education and career. She graduated from Northwestern University in June 2024 with a B.A. in Theatre (alongside the Music Theatre Certificate and Creating the Musical Module) and Economics with a minor in Legal Studies.

At Northwestern, she expanded on her performance abilities and found passion in diverse storytelling, lyric-writing, music composition, and collaborative creation. She was a head writer of the 92nd Annual Waa-Mu Show (the largest student-written musical in the country), and acted in various new work processes. Armed with a passion for storytelling and a desire to see South Asian Americans on the Musical stage, Reva began development of her own original musical -Chalo! A Soccer Musical alongside co-writer Avery Powers.  Chalo! accomplished her childhood vision, and after receiving a grant from Wirtz Theatre, Chalo! received its first new work workshop and presentation.

Professionally, Reva is continuing the development of Chalo! (previously titled Go! The Musical). Through a partnership with Pop Up! ProductionsChalo! has received a staged reading hosted at the Goodman Theatre, and most recently was awarded the Chicago Cultural Center's New Play Residency sponsored by the City of Chicago and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

Outside of Chalo!, Reva was also a finalist of the Greenlight Group Sound Balance Commission. She is continuing her pursuit of Music Theatre, Acting, and New Works performance with representation under Lily's Talent.

Artistic Philosophy

As a Desi American performer and writer with a keen interest in political law, I've always been intrigued by how diverse identities can alter an artistic work. My education and experiences at Northwestern have taught me that though my identity does not define my work, it does inform it. As such, every role I, or other diverse artists step into brings new meaning, depth, and perception to a new or established piece. That new meaning is something I am fascinated with as both an actor and writer. I enjoy analyzing and inviting the idea of how a different body can shape a familiar story. Along those lines, I believe that the most interesting pieces are those with the most diverse perspectives. I have cultivated this philosophy through my commitment to collaborative writing and acknowledging intersectionality in my theatre-making journey.
